Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of a solar and backup solution?

  • Installing a solar energy system in your home saves money on your electricity bill and protects you against rising electricity rates in the future.

  • Having a solar energy system also protects you against the effects of load shedding as you’ll be able to use your critical load appliances during load shedding

  • Solar power is also a  renewable energy resource which means you’ll be contributing to creating a healthier and sustainable environment by reducing your carbon footprint

How does the solar and backup system work?

  • Solar panels absorb the sun's energy throughout the day and convert it into direct current (DC) electricity. Homes and businesses generally run on alternating current (AC) electricity, so the DC electricity is then passed through an inverter to convert it to usable AC electricity. Batteries are then used to store excess energy that can be used as backup during load shedding/ periods of no sunlight

How much does the system cost?

  • The cost of installing a solar power system depends on a  number of factors including what solution you are looking for for your home, the size of your house and the amount of power you need to cover your needs. Empowered Homes works with you to find the best solution for your home

How do I know which size system is right for my house?

  • Getting a solar system is a big investment which is why we have a team of solar experts that help you understand your needs and help you decide on which system is the best for your needs

Do my solar panels produce power when there is no sun?

  • The amount of power your solar energy system can generate is dependent on sunlight so when there is no sun, the system produces minimal energy. However, the energy stored in the battery can be used during periods of low sunshine

Can I go off-grid with a solar solution?

  • Though you can depend primarily on the solar system when you purchase a system that provides energy for your needs, you will still be connected to the grid. This allows you to draw from the grid when your system is not producing all of the power that you need, and send power back to the grid when you produce more than you use

Will all my appliances work on my solar system during load shedding?

  • You should only use critical appliances (tv, lights, wifi, fridge) during load shedding as the battery will not have enough energy to power non-critical loads i.e stoves, heaters, dryers etc. We advise critical appliances so you don’t drain your battery and experience a blackout

Does Empowered Homes handle the whole solar system process?

  • Empowered Homes strives to make getting solar power easy and quick for you which is why we handle the process from consultations on the right system to installation and maintenance of your system

Do you have a sense of what is cheaper, a generator or solar solution?

  •  A cost per kWH basis, a solar solution is competitive if not cheaper than generator sources. We would just need the specific generator specifications to do provide a clear cost comparison over the useful life of each option

How can I get a quick estimate of my solar savings and cost of system?
